How to by-pass the typical telephone carriers - landline and mobile - with Android

First, forget iPhone.VOIPSIPDROID

It is a nice device and Apple did very well with it - but as with all proprietory, closed technology - it will be pushed aside by the community.

Android is now available and there are no restrictions - no "big brother" telling you what you can and can't do with your own devices. There is a bunch of excellent VOIP software for Android for free - meaning that you can now by-pass the telephone carriers' lock-in model completely.

Here is an image of what telephony will be;

  2. All-you-can-use 3G WIFI device <- the last service carriers will be needed for
    1. This will only be required until free WIFI host-spots are more available - check out Singapore or Narita Airport and others for changes happening as of this writing.
  3. Home and Office PCs with VOIP Software (X-Lite)
  4. Home and Office hard-phones (Linksys)
  5. VOIP Account with your own DID

You will be able to use the one personal DID for all your devices and the one work DID for all work-related devices.

With the central PBX server (VoiPNow) providing the full-featured services, you will use one number with voicemail, making and receiving calls on your Android, PC and the desktop IP Telephone (LinkSys).

As an example, Saloob and its Partners can provide the following based on VoiPNow;

  • Tokyo "03" DID (Telephone Number) - monthly fee at about 2,500 JPY / month
    • Voicemail
    • Greeting messages
    • Call Recording
    • Conference Call
    • Call-back bridge
    • Fax - and many more powerful features.
  • Softbank WIFI all-you-can-use device - 5,000 JPY / month
  • Linksys IP Telephone for home - 13,000 JPY one time
  • Android non-carrier edition - 10,000-70,000 JPY one time
  • Android VOIP Software - free
  • PC VOIP Software - free

When at home with your wireless network, use your Android over fast WIFI Broadband. You can also take calls on your PC - just like Skype or using a hardphone.

When on the go - use the WIFI device - keep it always on.

Of course there are billions of phones out there running off typical carriers' services, so it won't happen overnight - but it will happen.

As usual, carriers miss the point of what they should be doing - except Apple - whose only mistake is to close the service off so much. So, what should they be doing then?

Providing SaaS services and content to be consumed by these always-connected devices - not building a model around an eroding concept/business. If you think to argue this - then please first explain to us all how it is such that all major mobile players are using an open source mobile OS from a search engine player?
